Period 1
1868-1898
Entertainment before the turn of the century
This is an ad in the newspaper for a carnival. It is dated December of 1886. It shows that they used to have carnivals before the big theme parks were created. It teaches us because, as we can see from the ad, the carnivals were not that much different than nowadays state fairs, so we learn because we can relate in a way. I liked learning that they had carnivals back then because I thought that they were more of a modern (1900s-present) concept similar to todays fairs and festivals.

This is a youtube video I thought would be cool to add. It shows the first american films in 1981-1895. These were created by Thomas Edison by using a Kinetoscope. It was a cabinet with a peephole on the top which magnified the pictures that were inside. The first prototype could be turned into a projector by shining a light through the film.
