Introduction to the history of entertainment 1898-1930
This time period was really great for entertainment. In 1919 the first movie studio was built in Hollywood and shortly after that, other movie studios made their start. The famous Hollywood Land Sign (now Hollywood Sign) was built in 1923. In 1917 the United States joined World War I. During the war, at the movie theatre before the movies would start, they would show films that showed how great we were doing in the war. In 1920, the 18th amendment was passed which outlawed any buying, selling, or making of alcohol. Because of this, gangster movies would become popular in the early 1930s. In 1923, Walt Disney moved to Hollywood and started his small company that would later turn into the biggest entertainment company in the world. In 1927, the Walt Disney company made Steamboat Willie, the first ever cartoon to have synchronized sound. During this time period, Radio was the most popular and people went out to movie theaters to watch movies. Movies were made in black and white and the first movie with sound debuted in 1927.
This is a pamphlet by William Jennings Bryan sometime around 1918. It is convincing the public that prohibition is good and the 18th amendment should be passed. In it he says, " The saloon is a nuisance!... The saloon is the bureau of information for every sort of crime. It is the first place that a policeman looks for crime." I think it was significant because it helped people see the problem with alcohol and it helped pass the 18th amendment. I think that the 18th amendment helped entertainment because before it, men would work all day and spend a lot of time in bars. But without it, families would spend more time together going to the movie theaters and amusement parks.

Great Guns (1927)Great Guns was one of the earlier Disney cartoons, before Mickey Mouse when it was Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Even though this was made 9 years after World War I ended, it is set during the war. I think it is very significant for history because it depicts what war was like, in a funny cartoon way.
